"A good painter
has two main
objects to
paint, man and
the intention of
his soul. The
former is easy,
the latter hard
as he has to
represent it by
the attitude and
movement of the
limbs."

Toned
background
The painting opposite, “When Does Your Flight Leave?” is
painted over a toned background; I applied Golden’s fluid Acrylic
Quinacridone Burnt Orange in a light layer over the dry white gessoed
canvas. I allowed the orange to show through some of the local colour and
that adds a warm glow to the painting as well as unifying the piece. I
think the Burnt Orange helps create the feeling of a warm fall day.
You can use any colour as an under painting to produce
many effects and moods. I have several small wrapped canvasses painted
yellow that I want to paint some delicate violas on. The violas’ colours
range from pale mauve to a deep purple with yellow stripes. I think the
complimentary colour to yellow will add to the fragility of the flowers and
enhance the greens I will use for the leaves.
I prefer using acrylics for this process because the
paint dried quickly and is transparent allowing the under painting to show
through. It does not lift either so I do not have to worry about muddying
the underneath layer. I have done the same process with watercolour but it
is much more painstaking as it is very easy to lift the under painting and
make a mess.
Try this but be aware that the under colour you apply
will create a mood so be sure it is contributing to the mood and not
detracting. Happy painting.
E-mail me if you have any
questions.
